I am a ship captain, a cellist, and an artist.
My Art is about Passion: Sailing Ships, Painting the Sea, or making Music, focusing on the Natural World. (Usually obsessing on ships...)
I started painting ships about the same time I started building and sailing them, at 10 years old. My first painting, like my first boat, was only a crude representation of potential. My first boat was really a raft with a sheet attached, built by me and my brother. It sailed downwind, across the pond, and needed a strong swimmer to pull it back upwind in preparation for its next voyage. Likewise, my first painting was recognizable as a ship, however, it needed some help in transporting the viewer's imagination where I intended. Many years later, I have been blessed with a path that has allowed me to captain some of the most magnificent vessels afloat today. In the midst of this incredible journey, I have never lost my passion for creating windows into this world of tradition and majesty.
Recently I discovered scuba diving. I have seen wonders below the sea that
have entranced me every bit as much as the things that float upon it. While my ship paintings are almost exclusively done in watercolor, the vibrancy and immediacy of the undersea world has inspired me to explore these new visions with oil paint. With these paintings I try to communicate some essence of the patterns and complexity of movement that is found in these ethereal creatures, opening more windows into another world in an attempt to inspire further
emotion and feeling.
And the journey continues with the my new series "Reading Between the Lines," where I try to convice you that there is more there than meets the eye...
I hope that you will find time to look through some of these windows, to feel some of what I have felt, and to possibly see just a little further over the horizon.
Enjoy!
